Rohingya Refugees Risk Lives as Sea Crossings Surge

In the early hours of February 13, smoke rose from cooking fires in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh — home to the world’s largest refugee camp. As dawn broke, hundreds of Rohingya families prepared for a perilous journey: boarding overcrowded boats in hopes of reaching Malaysia or Indonesia.

The surge in sea crossings marks a desperate escalation in the Rohingya crisis. With conditions in the camps deteriorating and prospects for repatriation dimming, many refugees are turning to smugglers who promise safe passage — often at great cost.

UN agencies report that over 3,000 Rohingya have attempted maritime escapes since January, a sharp increase from previous months. The journeys are fraught with danger: capsized vessels, dehydration, abuse by traffickers, and detention upon arrival.

“We are witnessing a humanitarian breakdown,” said a UNHCR official. “These people are fleeing not just persecution, but hopelessness.”

The Rohingya, a Muslim minority from Myanmar, have faced decades of discrimination and statelessness. In 2017, a brutal military crackdown forced over 700,000 to flee to Bangladesh. Despite international condemnation, efforts to ensure safe and voluntary return have stalled.

In Cox’s Bazar, overcrowding, limited education, and restricted movement have created a climate of despair. Young people, in particular, see no future. “I’d rather die at sea than live like this,” said one 19-year-old refugee preparing to leave.

Regional governments are struggling to respond. Malaysia and Indonesia have increased patrols, but human rights groups warn that pushbacks violate international law. Meanwhile, donor fatigue threatens funding for humanitarian operations.

The crisis underscores the need for durable solutions — including legal pathways, regional cooperation, and accountability for abuses in Myanmar. Until then, the boats will keep leaving, and the Bay of Bengal will remain a corridor of desperation.
