France Disinvites South Africa from G7 Summit After US Pressure

Evian, France — France has rescinded its invitation to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to attend the upcoming G7 summit in June, following sustained diplomatic pressure from the United States. The South African presidency confirmed the move on Thursday, describing it as a setback for multilateral engagement.
US Threatens Boycott
According to presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya, the French government withdrew the invitation after the US threatened to boycott the summit if South Africa participated. “We’ve learnt that due to sustained pressure, France has had to withdraw its invitation to South Africa,” Magwenya told AFP.
The G7 summit, scheduled to take place in Evian, is a key platform for global economic and political dialogue among major industrialized nations.
Escalating Tensions
This diplomatic snub follows a series of confrontations between Washington and Pretoria. In November 2025, US President Donald Trump barred South Africa from attending the 2026 G20 summit in Miami and announced a halt to all financial support to the country.
Trump’s decision came after South Africa refused to symbolically pass the G20 presidency to a senior US Embassy representative during the closing ceremony of the Johannesburg summit.
Trump’s Accusations
In a controversial statement, Trump accused the South African government of ignoring human rights abuses against Afrikaners and other white minorities. “They are killing white people and randomly allowing their farms to be taken from them,” he posted. He further stated that South Africa would not be invited to the G20 and that all US subsidies would be terminated.
South Africa’s Response
South African officials have expressed disappointment over the G7 exclusion but emphasized their commitment to independent foreign policy. The presidency noted that the country remains open to dialogue and cooperation with all global partners.
Implications for Diplomacy
The incident underscores growing geopolitical rifts and the influence of bilateral tensions on multilateral forums. Analysts warn that such exclusions could undermine the credibility of global summits and weaken efforts to foster inclusive international cooperation.
